Model Thanh Hang proves she can act in Nu Hon Than Chet
Not all of Vietnam’s most popular starlets have always been career actresses – in fact several of Vietnam’s biggest hits recently have starred models and singers.
Thanh Hang surprised local audiences this Tet as a sharp-tongued but soft-hearted bartender in Nu Hon Than Chet (Kiss of Death), one of Vietnam’s highest-grossing films ever.
Initially famous for her long legs, Hang made a splash with her first supporting role in 2002’s Gai Nhay (Bar Girls), which is considered a landmark Vietnamese film.
She took on the role confidently without ever attending an acting class.
Beauty queen Truong Ngoc Anh plays a scrap vendor in Phat Tai
In this year’s romantic comedy Kiss of Death, Hang plays An, a young bartender who meets her dream man just days before she is scheduled to die.
The audience learns that she is about to die because her dream man is in fact an angel of death sent to take her to the underworld.
An desperately tries stay alive but gives in to her death in the arms of her lover, whose kiss takes her away from the earthly world.
Nguyen Quang Dung, who wrote and directed Kiss of Death, says he auditioned over 100 actresses before Hang finally showed him the lively character he was looking for.
He says he was not necessarily aiming for Hang, despite her popularity in Bar Girls.
“The producer asked me whether I was sure about hiring Hang, but at that time I was torn.”
Ngo Thanh Van’s first role in Sai Gon Tinh Ca
Hang then tested out her skills by playing the lead as the director spent a week auditioning the male lead and was able to convince Dung she had what it takes.
Due to several scandals, the musical Sai Gon Tinh Ca (Saigon Love Story), originally made in 2004 by Vietnamese American director Ringo Le, has not been released in local cinemas until this year.
The movie was the first time singer Ngo Thanh Van, one of the film’s female leads, had ever acted.
Van has just won best actress at the 15th Golden Lotus Vietnamese Film Festival for her lead role in last year’s Dong Mau Anh Hung (The Rebel), which was filmed after Saigon Love Story, but released before.
Lastly, this movie season, actress Truong Ngoc Anh in her first ever humorous character plays a pretty countryside girl who sells scraps and waste in Phat Tai (Becoming Rich).
Hilarious antics ensue when a wealthy man falls in love with Anh’s character and the bumpkin tries awkwardly and desperately to act rich.

Who will represent Vietnam at Miss Universe 2008?
VietNamNet Bridge – Miss Universe 2008 will take place on July 14 in the central province of Khanh Hoa, but Vietnam has not yet chosen its national representative.
This is not the first time Vietnam has participated in an international beauty contest, but Miss Universe 2008 is particularly special because of two factors: this is the first time the world’s second largest beauty contest will be held in Vietnam and the first time Vietnam will officially send a representative to a Miss Universe contest.
At the beginning, the plan was to organize a Miss Vietnam Universe pageant to choose the representative, but this plan was canceled. Competent agencies will have to select a girl who has won a pageant before to send to Miss Universe 2008.
Vietnam has not held any national beauty pageants so far this year, so beauties of 2006 and 2007 are potential candidates. In terms of prestige and influence, Miss Vietnam is at the top of the list. Mai Phuong Thuy, Luu Bao Anh and Luong Ngoc Lan were the winners of Miss Vietnam 2006 and all three meet the requirements to represent Vietnam at Miss Universe 2008. But which will it be?
Truong Tri Truc Diem and Pham Thi Thuy Duong
The first and second runners-up of Miss Vietnam 2006, Bao Anh and Ngoc Lan have partly lost their attractiveness. Miss Vietnam 2006 Mai Phuong Thuy is 20 years old now. She seems to be more mature, with experience learned at Miss World 2006 contest, but Thuy is hesitant to participate in beauty contests. After two pageants, she understands the difficulties and pressure after showy beauty contests.
Thuy said: “I’m ready to compete for the country if I’m chosen for the Miss Universe this year because I’m a Vietnamese citizen. But as for myself, I don’t want to take part in the event. I’ve tried my best to fulfill the responsibility of Miss Vietnam for the past two years. After transferring the crown to Miss Vietnam 2008, I will have more time for my studies, and then I will have more opportunities to continue fulfilling the responsibility of Miss Vietnam.”
Miss Vietnam Global was organized for the first time last year. Ngo Phuong Lan, Teressa Sam and Dang Minh Thu were the winners at this contest.
Minh Thu failed at Miss World 2007. Teressa Sam is supported for her beauty but she bears UK nationality so it is difficult for her to represent Vietnam at Miss Universe 2008. Ngo Phuong Lan, after refusing to attend Miss World 2007 for studying, there is no reason to refuse her duty to the country this time but her beauty is suitable for Miss World, which often honors gentle beauties, while sexy and modern beauty is often rewarded at Miss Universe.
Miss Vietnam 2006 Mai Phuong Thuy and Miss Vietnam Global 2007 Ngo Phuong Lan
Truong Tri Truc Diem, who recently entered the top 50 beauties of the world on the Globalbeauties website, said she is very happy and will try her best if she is selected for the Miss Universe 2008. But her chances are small because she only won the first runner-up title at a beauty contest held by a magazine in 2005.
Pham Thi Thuy Duong who participated in Miss International 2007 in Japan said she hasn’t heard any information about the Vietnamese candidate at Miss Universe 2008. She said it is better to choose the representative as soon as possible to give more time for her to prepare for the contest. Duong said she would not have the honour to represent Vietnam at this event so she didn’t prepare.
Actually, Thuy Duong can’t representative Vietnam at Miss Universe 2008 although she is very sexy and was mistaken to be Miss Universe 2007 Riyo Mori when she came to Japan for Miss International 2007 because she has never won an official title; though she was one of the top ten competitors of the Miss Vietnam 2006 pageant.
Other girls who are the winners of other beauty contests like Nguyen Thi Hoang Nhung, Miss Vietnam Ethnic 2007, Luu Van Anh, Miss Jewelry 2007 or Tran Thi Quynh, Miss Sports 2007 can have a small chance only because their English and communication skills are limited.
While Vietnam doesn’t select its representative for Miss Universe 2008, over 40 candidates from other countries are urgently preparing for the event. In an interview with a local magazine, Miss Universe of Puerto Rico expressed her sentiment to Vietnam and said one of her daily tasks is surfing the Internet to update information about Vietnam.
Good preparation will help beauties feel confident and it is one of the key to success. Vietnamese people complain that Vietnamese beauties didn’t show themselves at international contests but with a few days to prepare for international events, how can Vietnamese girls, who have been growing up in Vietnam only, have perfect preparation.

madona
NEW YORK (AP) -- Madonna, pop music's quick-change artist, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Monday and paid tribute to people who encouraged her and even critics who panned her for helping drive her career.
Madonna says "people are still encouraging me to believe in my dreams."
Heartland hitmaker John Mellencamp, with his son Speck playing guitar and his parents watching from a balcony above the Waldorf Astoria Hotel ballroom, joined the rock-kicking with a rumbling version of "Authority Song."
"I wrote this song, and I still feel the same way today as I did when I wrote it 25 years ago," Mellencamp said.
Philly soul producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, literate songwriter Leonard Cohen, British rockers the Dave Clark Five and surf instrumentalists the Ventures were among the other inductees.
Madonna recalled a teacher who encouraged her to follow her dreams when she was only 14.
"Thirty-five years later, people are still encouraging me to believe in my dreams," she said at the Waldorf Astoria induction ceremony. "What more could I ask for?"
Even the people who "said I was talentless, that I was chubby, that I couldn't sing, that I was a one-hit wonder, they helped me, too," she said. "They inspired me because they made me question myself repeatedly and pushed me to be better."
Singer Justin Timberlake, who helped produce Madonna's upcoming album, inducted her with an innuendo-laden speech.
"The world is full of Madonna wanna-bes. I might have even dated a couple," said Britney Spears' ex. "But there is truly only one Madonna."

Timberlake told of how he felt ill one day while working on Madonna's new album and she asked whether he wanted a B-12 shot. He said sure, expecting a doctor to show up, but Madonna pulled out a syringe and said, "Drop 'em."
After he pulled his pants back up, "She looked at me and said, 'That's top shelf,' and that was one of the greatest days of my life," he said.
"Everything he said is basically true," Madonna confirmed, "but I didn't say 'Drop 'em,' I said, 'Pull your pants down.' "
Madonna didn't perform, but asked punk rockers Iggy Pop and the Stooges to sing "Burning Up" and "Ray of Light." See why some people aren't happy about Madonna's induction »
At the end, a shirtless Pop said, "you make me feel shiny and new, like a virgin touched for the very first time," and tossed his microphone to the floor.
Gamble, taking the stage with his longtime partner, invited the audience to answer back his wish for "peace."
"Thank you so much, because that's exactly what our music represented," Gamble told the people gathered at for the annual ceremony, televised on VH1 Classic.
Patti LaBelle performed a chandelier-shaking rendition of "If You Don't Know Me By Now" to introduce Gamble and Huff. The songwriters and producers created a lush, melodic brand of soul performed by a variety of artists.
Gamble cited one: Billy Paul's tale of the adulterous affair in "Me and Mrs. Jones."
"There's a little 'Me and Mrs. Jones' going on here in New York," he said to laughter, hours after New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer was accused of hiring a prostitute.
He dispelled one rumor. The song "MFSB" stood for mother, father, sister, brother, he said. For years, others let their imaginations run wild with the initials.
One odd sign of the times: Among the favors distributed to guests at Monday's dinner was a box of 30 blank CDs, presumably so people wouldn't have to worry about buying CDs anymore.
The Ventures excelled at what is almost a forgotten art in rock music -- the instrumental. Nokie Edwards' twangy guitar gave the band its distinctive sound. They performed their first hit, "Walk, Don't Run," and "Hawaii Five-O."
John Fogerty recalled how he and fellow members of Creedence Clearwater Revival used to hang out in a garage learning the Ventures' songs.
"When the Ventures first hit the radio, I would say I was gone," Fogerty said. "The Ventures went on to record 250 albums. Think about that. These days, some of us would be happy to sell 250 albums."
Cohen, a Canadian, is one of music's most highly regarded, if not best-known, songwriters, through pieces like "Suzanne" and the much-covered "Hallelujah." Damien Rice sang the latter song in tribute.
Lou Reed, who was inducting Cohen, carried a sheaf of papers to the stage and read several examples of Cohen's lyrics.
"We're so lucky to be alive at the same time Leonard Cohen is," Reed said.
Cohen, dressed in a black tux, recited the lyrics to his song "Tower of Song" in a hushed voice.
"This is a very unlikely occasion for me," he said. "It is not a distinction that I coveted or even dared dream about."
Indiana's Mellencamp quickly ditched the stage name Johnny Cougar and became one of rock 'n' roll's most successful artists during the 1980s. "Pink Houses," "Hurts so Good" and "R.O.C.K. in the USA" are among his energetic hits. Mellencamp also joined with Neil Young and Willie Nelson to form the ongoing Farm Aid charity for American farmers.
The Dave Clark Five followed the Beatles in the original British Invasion, with catchy hits like "Glad All Over." Led by drummer and songwriter Clark, the band enters the hall at a tragic time: singer Mike Smith died at age 64 of pneumonia less than two weeks ago.
Little Walter, who died in 1968, joins the hall in its sidemen category. He recorded frequently with Muddy Waters in the 1950s.
"He defined an instrument, he defined a sound, he defined a genre," musician Ben Harper said of Little Walter
Final 'Harry Potter' book to be split into 2 movies
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Harry Potter was the center of seven novels, but he'll star in eight films.
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" will be split into two movies with the first slated for November 2010.
The final book in the wildly successful series will be made into two films, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.
Producers are expected to announce Thursday that J.K. Rowling's last "Potter" installment, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," will be split into two parts on the big screen. The first film is slated for release in November 2010, with part two following in May 2011.
"It was born out of purely creative reasons," producer David Heyman told the Times. "Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book."
The two final "Potter" films will be shot concurrently, much like the blockbuster trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy novel "The Lord of the Rings."
Another famous Tolkien tome, "The Hobbit," is also being split into two live-action movies set for back-to-back shooting to begin next year.
Filming on the sixth "Potter" flick, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," began in September. Learn more about the "Potter" series »
"It's been brilliant," said star Daniel Radcliffe. "It's also, I think, the funniest of the films so far."
The "Potter" film franchise has pulled in $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office
